Managing and Inserting Images

Training VideoFor a short flash video clip see the "Adding an Image" section of our recorded training session.

Inserting Images on to a Page

  1. As appropriate resize your images so they are appropriate for the web.
    • In general images should not exceed 600px in width or height since most web content is expected only to be used on a computer screen. In fact, if your image is expected to be included on a page with lots of other text content it is more than likely that it will prove unnecessary to have the image larger than 250px by 250px.

  2. Open the page for editing using the "Edit Page" administration link.
  3. Set the focus to the point in the page where you want the image inserted.
  4. Then use the appropriate Insert Image button to find the desired image.

Image Manager Icon Insert Community Image: Insert an image from your community's image library. Each COCC community has it's own image library where the community administrators can add and delete the available images.

COCC Community Image Icon Insert Gallery Image: Insert an image from one of your community's photo galleries or a shared COCC photo gallery. Images included here have been added for easy use across the COCC website.

COCC Add Caption Icon Add Caption to Selection: Add a caption to an existing image by selecting the image and clicking the Add Caption button. This will result in a table being created around your image using a default style with some placeholder text where you can type a caption.

IMPORTANT: After selecting a desired image be sure to set the Image Alt text so that screen readers have a good description to read in scenarios where the image can not be seen. (more Image Alt text information) To change the Alt text after an image is inserted simply right click on the image and select "Set Image Properties".

Positioning Images on a Page

Once inserted you can reposition the image by right clicking on the image selecting "Set Image Properties" and then changing the defined Image Alignment. For example, this is an easy way to have an image appear to the right of your page and have the surrounding text automatically wrap around the image.

NOTE: If you have added a caption to your image using the custom "Add Caption" tool mentioned above be sure you are changing the alignment for the surrounding table instead of the image.

You can also further position an image using the "Set Absolution Position" button (Set Absolute Position button). However, be careful with absolute positioning since the resolution varies between computers and as a result an absolute position may not appear the same on all computers.

Adding New Images for use in Your Web Community

New images can be uploaded to the web server from within the Insert Image dialog using the Browse and Upload buttons found at the bottom of the form. Within this same form existing images can also be deleted. REMINDER: Deleting images will cause them to no longer be available for any web pages that might be using them.

Your community's library of images can also be managed using the "Admin", "Edit Images" menu option available at the bottom of the left hand menus whenever logged in with Administrator priviledges.

IMPORTANT: Whenever possible images that you upload should be less than 50 KB in size, however when a larger image is required a maximum of 256 KB should always be reasonable. The reason for this size concern is that the larger your image the longer it will take for your page to be loaded when viewed. Since your images will be in either GIF or JPG format you'll quickly see that these size guidelines (even the <50 KB) are very reasonable.
