Overview of COCC's Community Web

The majority of COCC’s web sites are managed using COCC's Community web which has been built using Microsoft’s .NET technology.

  • A community is a web site or more specifically a web sub-domain such as current.cocc.edu or sgpaulson.cocc.edu.
  • In the community web model you create sections which are in many cases simply equivalent to a web page.

Although we do have a way for COCC’s Community Web look and feel to be used in FrontPage, for most users the community web more easily provides this appearance along with simplified administration and improved navigation.

Basic Information

  • Web page administration is available any time after logging in with the appropriate credentials while using Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Windows PC.
  • Web editing involves using a variety of web forms for creating and modifying existing web pages.
  • The Community web supports a variety of section (Page) types.
    • The most commonly used types are:
      • HTML Page - Contains a single editable HTML page
      • Parent - A section that contains other sections
      • Redirect Page - Contains page that redirects the browser to a designated URL
    • Other section types available are:
      • Articles - Contains articles that can represent news articles or other content
      • Blog - Designed to contain a range of topic posts, sorted in decending date order while easily supporting discussion.
      • Book - Contains book listings
      • Downloads - Allows downloading of files
      • Events - Contains event listings
      • Links - Contains internal and external links
      • Menu Divider - A section that does nothing other than provide a separator line on the generated menus.
      • Photo Gallery - Enables you to display a gallery of images
      • Redirect Community - Contains page that redirects the browser to a designated community
      • Redirect Page (NOTIFY) - Contains a page that notifies the user about the new location and then redirects them.
  • COCC web searching uses Google’s free University Search to index *.cocc.edu approximately every 30 days. We can not control the schedule with this free service, so web changes are not searchable until Google re-indexes our web. Other web search engines also index COCC’s web occasionally, but we do not have an arrangement with them for regular web indexing.
  • If you have suggestions or need to report a problem with a COCC web page use the “Contact page owner” link at the bottom of each page. If this option is not available, click the “Ask COCC for help” link and select the appropriate Web topic.
