Once you have added an assignment to your Blackboard course, you can use Blackboard's gradebook to track your students' completion status, download and view your students' work, provide your students with individualized feedback on their work, and assign each student a grade for his or her work.
- Login to BeachBoard. http://www.cocc.edu/login/blackboard/Default.aspx
- Under My Courses, click the name of the course that contains your assignment.
- Click the course's Control Panel link.
- Under Assessment, click the Gradebook link.
- Locate the assignment's score column.
Track your students' completion status
An exclamation mark (!) in the assignment's score column signifies that the student has completed the assignment and the assignment is ready to be graded.
A padlock icon in the assignment's score column signifies that the student is either in the process of submitting the assignment or the student accidentally clicked the assignment's Save button instead of the Submit button. The only way to fix this is instruct the student to login to Blackboard, access the assignment, and click Submit.
Check the date and time the students submit their assignments
To see the date and time your students submit their assignments
- In your Blackboard course's gradebook, click the name of the assignment at the top of that assignment's score column.
- Click the Item Download link.
This opens a page showing you a list of all of your students, the date and times they submitted their assignments, and the grades they received. The date and time record comes from the date and time on the Blackboard server, not the student's computer, that the assignment was submitted. [You can also see this information by viewing the Item Grade List or downloading all of your students' assignments.]
Download and view your students' work
To download and view all of your students assignments on your computer
- In your Blackboard course's gradebook, click the name of the assignment at the top of that assignment's score column.
- Click the Item Download link.
- Select the assignments you want to download to your computer. Links for Check All, Check Ungraded, and Uncheck All are located above the list of students.
- Click the Submit button.
- Blackboard automatically
- Creates a text file receipt showing the date and time each assignment was submitted
- Adds the assignment's name and the submitting student's nine digit campus ID to each assignment's filename. [For example, if a student whose campus ID is 820123456 submits a file titled my_term_paper.doc for your Term Paper 1 assignment in Blackboard, Blackboard will automatically rename that file Term_Paper_1_ 820123456_my_term_paper.doc]
- Combines these receipts and renamed assignment files into a single .zip file
- Right-click the Download assignments now link and choose either Save Target As (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link As... (in Mozilla Firefox)
- Save the .zip file to your computer's desktop or some other location you can easily access.
- When the download is complete, minimize or close all open programs on your computer.
- On your desktop, open the .zip file. If you have Windows ME or XP, or Apple OS X, double-click the .zip file to open it. If you have an older operating system, you will need to download and install an unzip utility like WinZip (PC) or StuffIt Expander (Mac.)
- Open the individual student's papers.

More Information
Q: How can my students see their assignment grades, feedback, and commented files?
A: There are three ways your students can access this information. On the My COCC tab, your students can click the View Grades link, then click the name of your course, then click on their assignment grade. On your course's homepage, your students can click the Course Tools link, then click the My Grades link, and then click on their assignment grade. Finally, on your course homepage, your students can click the Assignments link, then click the View/Complete Assignment link, then click the OK button. All three ways take the student to a page that shows them information about the assignment and its instructions, a link to their original assignment file, as well as their grade, your comments, and any files you've returned.
Q: What is the difference between Feedback to Student and instructor Notes?
A: The comments you type in the Feedback to Student section are visible to the student. instructor notes are only visible to you.
